Medium: Charcoal and Lead Pencils, Acrylic Paint, Markers, Colored Pencils. This piece was inspired by one of my final assignments in Architecture Design school, for a Christian Church project I designed. The Beacon, representing a grand staircase suspended from the ceiling in the main lobby of the facility, was to be constructed out of wood with a glass railing and steel supporting structure. I saw an opportunity to interpret a stairway to heaven whereby one can be purified, through a process of ascension and enlightenment, to transcend into a higher state of thinking and being. The piece shows a snapshot of transcendence. The very first step is literal in its portrayal. In the middle the image merges as the perspective changes indicating that as one pursues higher knowledge, somewhere along the journey is view and perspective of the journey undertaking changes. As the image progresses upward, it is deconstructed where the steps and their material become less recognizable as they shatter into a sheet of white, hinting at the light of knowledge. As most cultures associate light with goodness, it was crucial to bring light to the core of the building, a key concept, to really evoke the image of a beacon lighting the way to higher consciousness.
