Chester Fields brings the American bald eagle to life in bronze, capturing every feather and talon with breathtaking, lifelike detail. His sculptures freeze a single dramatic instant, like a swooping dive toward a rushing mountain stream, in gleaming, textured metal. If you love art that celebrates the power and grace of American wildlife, browsing Chester Fields sculpture is the perfect place to start, since every piece reflects decades spent studying his favorite subject.

About the Artist

Chester Fields was born in The Dalles, Oregon, and moved to British Columbia, Canada, with his family at age eight. He later earned a degree in graphic design at a college in Spokane, Washington, before serving in the U.S. Army in Germany. While stationed overseas, Fields visited numerous European museums, and it was there that he first became captivated by sculpture.

After returning to the Pacific Northwest, Fields worked as a commercial artist before turning to fine art full time, establishing his own studio in Veradale, Washington. He began his career creating two-dimensional acrylic and egg tempera paintings of birds and wildlife, quickly finding success and selling paintings in the thirty to fifty thousand dollar range.

Why Chester Fields Is Famous

In the mid-1980s, after twenty years as a painter, Fields shifted his focus to bronze sculpture, driven partly by a concern that American bald eagles might one day become extinct. He used his own money to fund his first sculpture, a four-foot bald eagle swooping to catch a rainbow trout, which he titled "Splashdown." In 1985, the piece won Best of Show at the prestigious C.M. Russell Auction in Great Falls, Montana.

Fields eventually created a monumental, twelve-foot version of Splashdown, and one of these large-scale pieces became the dramatic centerpiece of the Anheuser-Busch Companies' nine-story headquarters building in St. Louis, Missouri. Company chairman August Busch III was so impressed that he personally wrote Fields a letter praising the craftsmanship. Since then, Fields has specialized almost exclusively in eagle sculpture, working in sizes ranging from three feet to more than eighteen feet tall.

Why Fields's Arts Are Worth It: Investment Value

A Chester Fields bronze often combines several materials for dramatic effect, pairing a meticulously carved bronze body with stainless steel water elements and gold-plated eyes, beak, and feet. This combination of materials gives each piece a striking, layered realism that has made his eagle sculptures especially recognizable among collectors of American wildlife art.

Because Fields personally oversees the design and casting of each piece and produces work only in limited, numbered editions, well-documented pieces with clear provenance have remained highly sought after. Working with a trusted, experienced gallery is always the safest way to shop for his work, since a knowledgeable dealer can confirm a piece's edition size, materials, and history.

FAQ

Is Chester Fields's work a good investment?

Yes, in many cases. Because his eagle sculptures are produced in limited, numbered editions with mixed-material detail, well-documented pieces have often kept or grown in value over time.

What makes a Chester Fields bronze unique?

He combines bronze with stainless steel and gold-plated accents in a single piece, giving each sculpture a layered, lifelike realism rarely seen in wildlife art.

How much does a Chester Fields sculpture cost?

Prices vary widely depending on the piece's size and edition, ranging from a few thousand dollars for smaller works to significantly more for monumental pieces.

Why does Chester Fields focus almost entirely on eagles?

He began sculpting eagles in the 1980s out of concern for their survival, and the subject resonated so strongly with collectors that it became his lifelong focus.

Has Chester Fields's work been publicly recognized?

Yes. His sculpture "Splashdown" won Best of Show at the C.M. Russell Auction, and a monumental version was selected for the Anheuser-Busch headquarters in St. Louis.
